Reskilling & Upskilling

The act of reskilling and upskilling your current talent is a no brainer. It helps to retain employees, save recruitment costs, and increases workplace morale! This is not just something that large corporations do but small businesses can definitely contribute in the same way. By doing this, employers can ensure they enable their employees to grow their skillset all while improving the company’s competitive advantage. Here are some ways that you can work on reskilling and upskilling talent.

1. Use Free Resources

You do not need to be a large corporation with a whole learning and development department to work to reskill and upskill your team. Many companies fail to recognize that there are many free resources at your fingertips such as Khan Academy, edX, and FutureLearn. Additionally, a mentorship program is a simple and free way to provide training to junior level employees.

2. Train your Managers to be Coaches

This is also an important time to train your managers to be coaches. Supervisors and managers have a direct impact on their employees and they should continuously promote cross training efforts. It is important to ensure that management advocates for training by giving their employees time and flexibility to do so.

3. Keep Up with Technology

It is so important to ensure that your employees are up to date with technology changes. Tech continues to play a larger and larger role in businesses. Given the new advancements, it can be very difficult for employees to keep up. An important thing to do is take a multi-pronged approach by implementing different training systems from videos to written instructions to hands on training.

Continuous learning and development should be an integral part of a company’s culture. It is important to remember that this process is forever ongoing and there is no end date to upskilling and reskilling! Additionally, there is no one-size-fits all approach as everyone has a unique path of learning and upskilling.
